Overtime and (Relative) Upsets Mark Friday Landscape

Douglas C. Pizac-US PRESSWIRE

A quick rundown of the action and excitement from Friday's best games.

Fort Wayne 97, Texas-Pan American 94 (3OT)

Rough night for Fort Wayne (The Artist Formerly Known As Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne). They out-rebounded (57-44) Texas-Pan American, had more steals (11-7), fewer turnovers (18-21), and made almost as many free throws (32) as their opponent took (36.

And they still needed triple overtime to win after blowing a six-point lead in the final 1:01 of the game. Frank Gaines scores 13 of his game-high 30 points in the extra frames to help TAFKAIPFW to their second win.

Arkansas State 77, Tennessee-Martin 73 (3OT)

This game was extra special. No, not because the game went to triple overtime. As we just showed you, they weren't even the only game to do that tonight. No, what makes this game special is that The Wolves and Skyhawks combined to take 13 shots from the field in the second overtime - and missed every single one of them.

That's right, the score at the end of the first overtime was 65-65, and at the end of the second overtime the score was still 65-65. I'm not sure what it says about Arkansas State's offense that their second highest scorer played every second of a 55 minute game and managed only 13 points, but a win is a win, I suppose.

Murray State 72, St. Johns 67

The Racers have definitely got some fight in them. After scoring the opening basket, they quickly found themselves down by 13 (32-19), but managed to claw their way back into the game and cut the deficit to five (35-30) by halftime.

Murray played catch-up all second half, and looked like it might stop working when the Red Storm hit a jumper out of a TV timeout with 7:31 left to go up seven, 59-52. That's when the magic happened. St. Johns was held to 2-of-11 shooting over the final seven and a half minutes, while the Racers shot 7-of-10 (including four three-pointers) to seal the win against a Big East foe.

Sacramento State 74, Utah 71

The Hornets also shut things down late to pull out a win, but perhaps in even more impressive fashion than the Racers. With 12:27 left to play, Utah's Justin Seymour drained a three to push the Utes' lead to 58-45, and Sacramento State immediately called a timeout.

Whatever was said in that huddle, it worked: SSU got hot and went 10-of-20 from the field while holding their opponent to a measly 4-for-17 shooting performance, and Dylan Garrity scored 11 of his game-high 19 points during that span. Now that they've beaten a more reputable opponent, we may need to keep an eye on these Hornets.

Pepperdine 58, Washington State 56 (OT)

This was another fun one. Washington State made a jump shot with 5:25 to play in regulation to push their lead to 50-42...and didn't score another point. Meanwhile, Lorne Jackson came out of the under-four TV timeout and drained back-to-back threes to cut into that lead, and then put in the go-ahead layup in extra time, all part of his game-high 15 points to help Pepperdine notch their first win - in their home opener, to boot.
