The transitioning Division I school has made a splash with their most recent hiring.

If you haven't heard of Grand Canyon University, it's likely because they have yet to transition to Division I yet. If you've heard of Dan Majerle, it's probably because you played a lot of NBA Jam growing up.

"Thunder" Dan, who played for the Phoenix Suns from 1988-95 and again in 2001-02, will take over the head coaching job at the Phoenix based school. Majerle will take over for Russ Pennell who resigned after a 23 win season and a 72-44 record over the past four years.

Grand Canyon is transitioning to Division I and the Antelopes will play in the WAC next year. They'll join a very different conference then we're used to as the WAC also adds Chicago State, Utah Valley State, Cal State Bakersfield, UMKC, and Texas Pan-American.

Majerle has spent the last six years as an assistant head coach for the Suns. Suns owner Jerry Colangelo is a special assistant to the president at Grand Canyon.

An official announcement on Majerle's hiring is expected on Monday.
