Coaching Carousel: What Will James Madison Do With Matt Brady?

Joe Robbins

Matt Brady is a man without a contract after taking JMU to the tournament. Will he remain with the Dukes or head elsewhere.

Matt Brady lead James Madison to their first NCAA tournament since 1994, a CAA title, and even a NCAA tournament win over Long Island. So why does Matt Brady still not hold a contract three days after the season expired?

The former Marist coach has been anything but consistent in Harrisonburg. His win totals year by year are 21, 13, 21, 12, and 21.

So what is Brady doing and what is his future? Can he go in the JMU facilities or is he just relaxing at home awaiting a contract from somewhere? Luckily for Brady he's coming off a banner year, he's a Siena graduate, and Siena a has a job opening.

Despite his success in the MAAC with Marist and with JMU, Brady probably isn't the Saints first choice. That first choice may go to Loyola's Jimmy Pastos, FIU's Richard Pitino, or even Bucknell's Dave Paulsen. One thing is for sure, with a great arena and the Atlantic 10 rumored to be knocking on the door, Siena is an attractive job.

But what about JMU? Why haven't the Dukes jumped head first into contract negotiations with their CAA championship coach. Some have hinted at deteriorating relationships within JMU's athletic department and perhaps that Brady was very much a lame duck coach this year. Does JMU want Brady or do they want to move on?

The other variable here is Rayshawn Goin's arrest a couple of days before the NCAA tournament and the punishment laid down by Brady (a half). Could the Goins arrest open the door for JMU to pursue new leadership?

It's certainly an awkward situation in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the longer this lingers the more awkward it will get.
