2014 America East Quarterfinals: Stony Brook and Hartford Advance to Meet in Semifinals

Jennifer Stewart-USA TODAY Sports

Some tough shooting days for the four teams in the bottom half of the bracket during the America East quarterfinals. But Stony Brook and Hartford survive to fight another day.

Stony Brook Dumps Maine at Free Throw Line

If you wanted someone to watch a shooting clinic, hopefully you didn't pick the America East quarterfinal between Stony Brook and Maine. That is, unless you wanted to teach someone to shoot free throws.

The two teams went to the line a combined 48 times, and made 39 of them. That pales in comparison to the number of rebounds in the game: 78.

Stony Brook used 10 more attempts at the line and a little bit of better shooting overall to earn an 80-54 win and a trip to the semifinals.

Conference Player of the Year Jameel Warney led the way with 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in the win. Carson Puriefoy added 14.

Xavier Pollard went 6-for-6 at the free throw line for Maine and had 11 points to pace the Black Bears.

Hartford Stifles Binghamton

It started with a 17-3 run by Hartford and ended with a 69-42 victory by the Hawks to fly into the semifinals.

But this was more about the Hartford defense than any offensive run. Mark Nwakamma had six blocks, and the Hawks forced the Bearcats into 16 turnovers in the game, on just 61 possessions.

Yes, if you are calculating at home, Binghamton scored just 0.68 points per possession. That is just not going to do it, which helps explain why the Bearcats were in the bottom 40 teams in Ken Pomeroy's basketball ratings.

Nwakamma scored 19 points to go with his block party and Taylor Dyson scored 18 in the win. Yosef Yacob was the only player for Binghamton to reach double figures with 10 points
