Coaching Carousel: Davidson's Jim Fox to Takeover at Appalachian State

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Former Davidson assistant Jim Fox will try to resurrect a long struggling Appalachian State program as they head to the Sun Belt Conference.

Jason Capel had the Appalachian State Mountaineers on a promising trajectory but after a 9-21 season and recruiting public relations disaster the former North Carolina Tar Heel was let go this Spring. After whiffs with former Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz, current Rice head coach Mike Rhoades, VMI's Duggar Baucom, and Wofford head coach Mike Young the Mountaineers have finally landed on Davidson's Associate Head Coach Jim Fox.

Fox coached under Bob McKillop for the past 13 years and was promoted to associate head coach before the 2012-13 season.

In a release from the school Appalachian State athletic director Charlie Cobb said:

"We're very excited to welcome coach Fox to the Appalachian family. He is well-respected across the country and his winning pedigree speaks for itself. However, what really made him stand out in the search process is his commitment to building a winning men's basketball program at Appalachian State. App Nation wants a consistent winner in men's basketball and we believe that coach Fox is the right choice to not only win but do so with student-athletes that will represent Appalachian the right way on and off the court."

Appalachian State will jump from the Southern Conference to the Sun Belt next season. The Mountaineers have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2000.
