Big Sky Tournament 1st Round: Weber State dispatches of Northern Arizona, 84-58

USA Today Sports

Two-seed Weber State took care of business to begin the tournament.

The two-seed Weber State Wildcats maintained an early lead to put away seven-seed Northern Arizona, 84-58, in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament on Thursday in Missoula.

Weber State's two seniors led the way to the first-round win. Big man Frank Otis scored 16 points on 7-10 shooting to lead the Wildcats, while shooting guard Scott Bamforth added 12 points in the win.

With Northern Arizona struggling to score, Kyle Tresnak paced Weber to an early 9-0 lead with six points and a blocked shot. Tresnak also added 12 points, while Big Sky Newcomer of the Year Davion Berry scored 13 with six rebounds and six assists.

The upset wasn't in the cards for the Lumberjacks, who finish the season with a record of 11-21. Leading scorer Gabe Rogers scored only 12 points, and started the game shooting 2-10 before finishing 5-16. NAU committed 17 turnovers as well, six of them coming in the first few minutes as Weber took control.

While the Wildcats -- the top-shooting team in the country -- were a bit cold from behind the arc, they still shot 54% from the field (30-56).

Freshman guard Dewayne Russell led the 'Jacks in scoring with 21 points, playing a game-high 37 minutes.

Weber State advances to 25-5 on the season and will next face the second-highest seed remaining after the day is finished. That semifinal game tips on Friday at 5:30 p.m MT.
