Charlotte Takes Puerto Rico Tip-Off With a 63-61 Win Over Michigan

It was quite a weekend of college hoops in Puerto Rico and one, underdog team reigned supreme when the dust had settled.

What a week it was in Puerto Rico. There were upsets, large amounts of rum consumption, a dancing banana, a guy dressed up in a ketchup bottle, and even an epic monsoon that knocked out the ESPN feed on Thursday night (either that or Shaka Smart kept sending a grad assistant to unplug the cables during the Rams drubbing at the hands of Florida State.

In the end there will only be one team heading back from the mainland with a massive hangover and that will be the Charlotte 49ers. Alan Major's hairline, whoops I mean...the 49ers came into Puerto Rico 2-1 after wins against Elon and East Tennessee State and a loss to Charleston. They left our 51st state with the legendary Puerto Rico Tip-Off Trophy.

After upsetting Kansas State and then beating Northeastern, the 49ers knocked off #14 Michigan 63-61 Sunday night thanks to a tip in from Terrence Williams with less than 2 seconds left in the game. Williams is now the king of the Coliseo de Puerto Rico.

Sunday's win will certainly give the new Conference USA school a resume boost early this season and perhaps even propel them into the Top 25. Also the product of basketball at the Puerto Rico Tip Off continues to grow and we're sure to continue to see quality fields in San Juan.

Charlotte is done for the month of November, but will face a particularly in-state flavor of opponents come December with match ups versus UNC Asheville, Davidson, Appalachian State, North Carolina A&T, and USC Upsate (hey! close enough right!). Alan Major's squad will also get a shot at Florida State, a team that was impressive in Puerto Rico but avoided matching up with the 49ers.
