Iona Outruns FGCU En Route To Blowout Victory

Through a combination of uptempo pace and lights out shooting, the Gaels walked away from Dunk City with a big non-conference win.

Led by Tre Bowman, Iona knocked down shots from every spot imaginable and outran FGCU to capture a 90-72 win in Dunk City.

Both teams knew it would be an uptempo affair but FGCU struggled to replicate what they did last March. The Gaels, on the other hand, ran from the start and never looked back. They took a 12 point lead into halftime in large part to Tre Bowman. On the day, the senior guard poured in 29 points, shooting 11/13 from the field and 4/6 from long range.

While Iona was able to get some easy buckets in transition, they also were able to knock down shots from deep. Concerned inside, the Eagles often collapsed and were late on closeouts. This left the Gaels with open looks and they converted, shooting 52% from downtown.

While Dunk City wasn't too shabby offensively, scoring a season high 72 points against D-I opponents, their outside shot wasn't falling. Iona was intent on keeping FGCU out of the lane and forcing them to make outside shots.

An even bigger storyline for Florida Gulf Coast is the status of redshirt junior of Eric McKnight. The Iowa State transfer had been suspended for the first six game of the season, and now the suspension has been altered to "indefinite". This is a huge blow for the Eagles who are already having their fair share of front court troubles.

The Gaels now head back to New York to battle Marist while Florida Gulf Coast will face off against FIU.
