Morning Coffee: Fieler's Shot Doesn't Count, Yale Almost Wins, and Charlotte Gets Hammered

Chase Fieler figured out how to bend space and time to his will, although the refs didn't follow him through the wormhole. Yale almost wins against Providence, and Charlotte totally didn't show up. All of that and more to catch up with over your morning coffee.

What everyone will be talking about over their morning coffee:

Chase Fieler Figures Out the Non-Tip-In 0.3 Second Shot

OK, so this is really a quirk of the clock operator not being able to start the clock fast enough, or react fast enough. Have you seen the age of some of these guys? They don't have reflexes any longer. This is why there is a rule.

And the rule says that if you have 0.3 seconds or less on the clock, you have only enough time to tip the ball in. There is no catch and shoot because it is physically impossible.

Now, that is assuming a perfect world where the clock is somehow controlled by someone touching the ball and not by the old guy on the sidelines.

Florida Gulf Coast's Chase Fieler however does not live in that world, and Tuesday night against South Florida, he managed to catch and shoot in 0.3 seconds, and score.

Except the refs went to the tape to look at the shot, and he didn't tip it in. Rules are rules, but sometimes, rules suck. There is a purpose here, so that you don't have to blame the clock operator for pressing the button fast enough, but you almost never see something like this actually work either.

Bernard Thompson had 32 points for the Eagles and Fieler added 10 points and 11 rebounds in the 68-66 double OT loss to the Bulls.

Side of bacon:

Charlotte Crushed by Florida State

Remember a couple of weeks ago when we thought that Charlotte was looking pretty good. That was after a win over Michigan in the championship game down in Puerto Rico.

Now the 49ers ended up facing Michigan because the Wolverines took out Florida State in the semifinals. Maybe if something different had happened on that side of the bracket, we might not have been so high on Charlotte after that win.

The Seminoles got their shot against the 49ers on Tuesday and they beat them down to the tune of 106-62.

Now granted, we haven't been looking at Charlotte in quite the same way since that Michigan win. They had the weird loss to Davidson, who was playing without De'Mon Brooks, and they just haven't been the same team that needed everything to work to beat Michigan.

But you don't expect that team to lose by 40-plus. Ever.

Pierria Henry had 13 points, four assists and two steals in the loss.

Other bites:

  • Missouri State's game against Louisville was over in 1, 2, 3. That is how many fouls that Emmanuel Addo tallied prior to the first television timeout. He was limited to just 11 minutes in the game, and it severely hampered the Bears ability to work inside or switch and defend well against Louisville in a 90-60 loss. The Cardinals went on a 16-0 run over seven minutes in the first half -- a half when Louisville had more offensive rebounds than the Bears had rebounds -- and that pretty much sealed this one. Jarmar Gulley finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
  • New Mexico State earned a split with New Mexico on the season, with each team winning on its rival's floor. The Aggies took Tuesday's game 67-61 behind 14 points, five assists and four steals from Daniel Mullings. New Mexico State almost let an 18-point lead slip away in this one, a lead built on the back of a 7-for-17 shooting night from 3-point range. Maybe we need to take another look at the Aggies in the Mid-Major 15.
  • Wichita State had to hold on to beat Alabama 72-67. A performance like this by the Crimson Tide actually makes me value Drexel's 3 OT win against them in the NIT a little more. Not that I think that Drexel could take out Wichita State, although... Cleanthony Early scored 26 points and went a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line in the win.
  • Toledo = Still Undefeated. The Rockets are 10-0 after a 78-65 win over Arkansas State. More on this one over at Hustle Belt.
  • Willie Green dropped in a shot at the buzzer to give Stetson a 64-62 win over Florida Atlantic. It was just the second win of the season for the Hatters, to 10 losses. Green finished with 18 points and nine boards.
  • Yale fell 68-66 to Providence after pushing the Friars to the brink. The Bulldogs.got 31 points from Justin Sears in the loss. Is it just me, or have all the Ivy teams been really pushing big teams this year. I think the eight teams up in the Northeast are going to have one heck of a conference season coming up. I am not sure any school will go unscathed through this, not even Harvard.
  • Elon tried everything they could to take down Georgetown and had a six-point lead against the Hoyas, but ultimately fell 85-76. The Phoenix went 13-for-29 from 3-point range, and shot 50 percent for the game, a rare success against a very difficult Hoya defense. Lucas Troutman and Tanner Samson each had 18 points and Samson added seven boards and three assists in the loss.
  • Manhattan earned its seventh road win of the year against Division 1 teams with an 86-68 victory over South Carolina. George Beamon had 26 points and five boards, and Michael Alvarado had 20 points and six assists in the win. Rhamel Brown and Ashton Pankey each had four blocks for the Jaspers.
