It was a record high day, in terms of temperature, in Richmond today and was also very humid. The humidity wreaked havoc in the newly renovated Robins Center and the surface was more like an ice skating rink than a basketball court.
This was a back and forth game from the beginning, but it did look like the Spiders may pull away when they went up 20-12 with 10:45 left in the first half. Jim Christian then switched to a 2-3 defense that would stifle the Spiders the rest of the way and cut their lead to four going into halftime.
A Jon Smith tip in with 9:30 left in the second half would finally get the game tied for the Bobcats. It looked like the domination of Ohio big man Maurice Ndour and Richmond's poor free throw shooting would doom the Spiders, but the the Spiders' backcourt would keep them afloat and a Kendall Anthony jumper would send the game to overtime.
Cedrick Lindsey had quite a day and his fifth twenty plus point game of the season. He finished the day with 23 points, 5 assists, and four rebounds. Kendall Anthony finished with 17 points including a six-for-six performance from the charity stripe.
Lindsey's biggest bucket would come with 32 seconds remaining in overtime to put the Spiders up 69-67. After a timeout from both teams, Ohio would draw up a play for Kellogg that finished in a huge three pointer with just 9 seconds to play.
Lindsey once again had an opportunity to be a hero and drove the length of the court only to miss a runner and then Wayne Sparrow missed a wide open layup that would have won the game as time expired for the Spiders.
The game's hero, Kellogg, finished the afternoon with 14 points and also added 9 rebounds. Richmond had no answer for Ndour in the paint and the junior finished with 19 points and 7 boards. Ricardo Johnson was the other Bobcat in double-figures with 14 points and 6 rebounds.
Ohio moves to 8-3 on the year and won't play again December 30 when they host Longwood. Richmond drops to 8-4 and will host in-state rival Old Dominion on next Saturday.
