Cal State Northridge is set to hire former NBA All-Star Reggie Theus as their next head coach. The Matadors fired Bobby Braswell earlier last month. Braswell spent 17 seasons at Northridge and was 15-17 this past year. Northridge has not had a winning campaign since 2008-09.
Theus' coaching career catapulted after taking the helm of the fictional Deering High School co-ed squad on NBC's "Hang Time" in the late 90s. After his acting career Theus took New Mexico State to the NCAA tournament in 2006-07. He then went on to coach the Sacramento Kings for a year.
After being fired by the Kings, Theus was on Kirk Rambis' staff for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2009 to 2011. He spent the last year as the head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBDL.
Theus had interest in the New Mexico opening that Steve Alford left, but he was under a twenty-four hour window to decide on the Northridge job. His name has come up in high profile coaching searches over the past couple of years, including UNLV and DePaul.
