Stand up and cheer, Wichita State is a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Shockers will head up the Midwest Region, and look to make it back to the Final Four starting with a game against either Cal Poly or Texas Southern
Despite all the naysayers and the people who doubted the schedule that led to a 34-0 record prior to the NCAA Tournament, the committee did the right thing and gave the Shockers a spot on the top line.
There were some doubts lingering, possibly because of the way that Gonzaga was handed a top seed last season when they entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 team in the country. That Zags team failed to live up to the hype, and fell to, well, this Wichita State team in the third round.
This Wichita State team is different than that Gonzaga team. This team has the focus to push through and get to the Final Four again. We at Mid-Major Madness put some hope on the Zags last season, if only because the region they played in seemed winnable when it was announced.
But this is different. We are putting faith in the Shockers to get back to the Final Four now, before the bracket is even fully announced. This is a team that plays like nothing I have seen in my last 15 years of covering college basketball. They have very few weaknesses, and none that they can't overcome as they have done multiple times this season.
They have what it takes to get to the Final Four. They have what it takes to be 40-0.
