Davidson and Chattanooga was the marquee game coming into Thursday night's Southern Conference slate. The Mocs surged to an 8-0 record in the conference, while traditional power Davidson had a 6-1 mark thus far. It was new school versus the old school and the old school imposed their will tonight.
First year head coach Will Wade and his surprising Mocs squad simply didn't show up tonight and were blasted 94-51 by the Wildcats. De'Mon Brooks finished the game for Davidson with 27 points and 12 rebounds to inch Bob McKillop's squad closer to the SoCon lead. Chattanooga's leading scorer Z Mason was held to just 7 points and 2 rebounds despite averaging 18.8 points and 9.5 rebounds coming into tonight.
Davidson will host a struggling Citadel squad on Saturday, while Chattanooga will look to rebound against Furman.
Elon was the other preseason favorite in the SoCon taking on an challenging squad tonight. The Phoenix took care of business tonight in a 74-60 win over Western Carolina to bring them back above .500 in conference play.
Elon was propelled by nine three pointers and have five players in double-figures, lead by Lucas Troutman with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Phoenix also did a good job in keeping Western Carolina star Trey Sumler in check. Sumler scored just six points, his lowest point total and the first time he hasn't reached double-figures since a November 21 game against Kent State.
Western Carolina has now lost three out of their last four after starting off SoCon play 4-0. The Catamounts will try to get things back on track this weekend against Appalachian State next weekend, after a week off. Elon's next game is also against Appalachian State, but that will be played this Saturday.
UNC Greensboro needed a win tonight after three straight losses in SoCon play. It wasn't easy for the Spartans, who came back from a 13 point halftime deficit, but they got the job done against Appalachian State 66-61. UNCG had to weather the storm and persevere during a night in which they went 9-for-17 from the free throw line.
Jordan Potts was the start for the Spartans dropping 26 points from off the bench. Kyle Cain also had a big night scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Tommy Spagnolo lead the Mountaineers with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
UNCG will look to move back above .500 this weekend against Georgia Southern.
It's been rough for the Citadel Bulldogs this season with a 0-8 start to conference play, but tonight's 83-52 loss to the struggling Georgia Southern Eagles had to be the low point. Georgia Southern snapped a three game skid tonight, while the Citadel has now not won a Division I game since November 12 versus Presbyterian.
Jelani Hewiit lead the Eagles tonight with 22 points and 5 assists, while Tre Bussey added 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Ashton Moore was the Citadel's high scorer with 14 points and 5 boards.
