Coaching Carousel: South Dakota Moving on from Joey James

Joey James was named the interim head coach for South Dakota in September taking over for long-time head coach Dave Boots who retired. James will not be retained as the Coyotes head coach after a 71-55 loss to Denver in the Summit League Tournament on Sunday.

The Coyotes went 12-18 this season and were 6-8 in the Summit League. This season was only the fifth official Division I season for South Dakota, who has not had a winning season since 2010-11 when they were a member of the Great West Conference and lost to North Dakota 77-76 in double-overtime of the conference championship.

James played at South Dakota and graduated in 2000. He spent ten years as an assistant for the Coyotes before being named the interim head coach.  Given his history there could be a chance that James is retained by the next head coach in Vermillion.
