It was a bit of a different match up between city rivals Richmond and VCU tonight in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals. Instead of their typical match ups in front of passionate, sold out crowds when the two clash in Richmond, this game was being played in the Barclays Center in front of plenty of VCU fans but a rather sterile atmosphere for the most part.
Richmond had an uphill battle without Cedrick Lindsay and Derrick Williams, along with also taking on HAVOC a night after beating Duquesne.
The same offensive troubles that have plagued Richmond down the stretch this season popped up again in the first half tonight when the Spiders found themselves down 38-22 to #23 VCU at the half.
The Spiders offense picked up a bit in the second half but it was too little too late and it was pretty much the Briante Weber show in Brooklyn. The Rams' star guard scored 18 points and grabbed 5 boards in the 71-53 win. Treveon Graham had 14 points while Melvin Johnson added 13.
Terry Allen was the lone bright spot for the Spiders tonight and was impressive for the second night in a row. Allen followed up his career 27 point night against Duquesne last night with 16 points and 5 boards against the Rams.
VCU now awaits the winner of UMass and George Washington, two teams that beat the Rams this year. Meanwhile, Richmond will head home looking for an invite to either the NIT or CBI to close out their season.
