Rumors leaked out several days ago that Western Illinois coach Jim Molinari was most likely resigning and joining Tim Miles' staff at Nebraska, a void left when Craig Smith took the head coaching job at South Dakota. Now those rumors have been confirmed true and Leathernecks' athletic director Tommy Bell released a statement:
"Having known Coach Molinari for more than 20 years and watched his incredible basketball career and accomplishments he had at Western Illinois University, we wish him continued success and the best of luck. We thank him for his service to our institution. He will be missed."
Molinari was 79-104 in his six years at WIU and 10-20 this past year. His best season came a year ago when the Leathernecks went 22-9 and appeared in the CBI for their second straight year. Western Illinois has never been to the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level since joining in the early 80s.
