Coaching Carousel: Dan D'antoni Hired at Marshall

Marshall didn't get their first choice from the D'antoni family but have made their hire.

Chris Trotman

The Marshall Thundering Herd seemed dedicated to getting a D'antoni as their head coach. The Conference USA school pursued Lakers head coach Mike D'antoni hard for their opening but then settled on his brother Dan (yes, his name is Dan D'antoni) for their opening.

D'antoni is a Marshall alum who played for the Herd from 1966 to 1970. The 66 year old has been an assistant coach for his brother with the Suns, Knicks, and Lakers. Before heading to the NBA D'antoni was an assistant at Marshall for the 1970-71 season and then was the head coach at a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina based high school for 30 years from 1975 to 2005.

Marshall also was thought to be interested in North Carolina Central coach LaVelle Moton, Stephen F. Austin's Brad Underwood, and Eastern Kentucky's Jeff Neubauer.

The Thundering Herd has not been to the NCAA Tournament since 1987 and is 0-5 all-time on that stage.
