Several national news outlets posted last night that Southern Miss had offered their head coaching job to current Stephen F. Austin head coach Brad Underwood and that Underwood was expected to be announced as the Golden Eagles head coach today. Not so fast...
Stephen F. Austin released a statement today that said Underwood will stay with the Lumberjacks:
"Coach Underwood has indicated to me that he will remain a Lumberjack," said SFA Athletics Director Robert Hill. "I look forward to another exciting season with him leading our program, and we will continue to move forward with Coach Underwood and what should be a great basketball team."
Underwood was 32-3 as a first year head coach in Nacogdoches and lead SFA to the 3rd round of the NCAA Tournament after upsetting VCU in their opening game. Underwood was also said to be offered the Marshall job last week.
Southern Miss is now still searching for Donnie Tyndall's replacement after he bolted for Tennessee. It's been reported that Murray State head coach Steve Prohm was the Golden Eagles' second choice and that they also have interest in Jay Ladner who was just hired as the head coach at Southeastern Louisiana less than a month ago.
