Davidson’s Jack Gibbs and Gonzaga’s Nigel Williams-Goss have both been named to the 2017 Bob Cousy Award preseason watch list, which was released Monday afternoon.
The award is presented annually to the best point guard in the country. Jameer Nelson from St. Joseph’s, the only mid-major player to ever win the award, won it in its inaugural 2004 season. Tyler Ulis from Kentucky won last year.
Gibbs comes into his senior season following a standout junior year that saw him average 23.5 points and 4.9 assists per game in 35.5 minutes. He had three games of 40-or-more points last year, including a 43-point outburst against Massachusetts in January.
Williams-Goss sat out last year per NCAA transfer rules, but will be one of several key transfers for the Bulldogs this season. In 2014-15, he averaged 15.6 points and 5.9 assists per game for Washington. Look for his assist numbers to increase as he surrounds himself with more talent in Spokane.
