Matt Norlander released his list of the top 20 breakout player candidates and two mid-major players made the cut.

NCAA Basketball: NIT-Semifinals-San Diego State vs George Washington Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this week, matt Norlander of CBSSports released his list of the top 20 breakout candidates heading into the 2016-17 college basketball season. It’s an intriguing group of players that should play big roles in how this season unfolds.

The mid-major conferences found themselves with two players making the cut on the list. This clearly speaks to what fans should expect out of the mid-major teams heading into this season.

Here’s a full look at the mid-major players listed below.

Mid-Major Players On CBS Breakout Players List:

  • Zylan Cheatham (San Diego State)
  • Markis McDuffie (Wichita State)

It wasn’t surprising to see whether Cheatham or McDuffie make the cut considering that both are projected to have big years. Each should be on a team in the national conversation and in the NCAA Tournament hunt.

Cheatham showed his talent during last season, averaging 7.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as a freshman. His rebounding numbers were also impressive with a 9.0% offensive rebounding rate and a 19.4% defensive rebounding rate. If he can expand his offensive usage, he should be one of the nation’s best players.

Likewise, McDuffie really played well in limited time as a freshman last year. He posted a 104.1 offensive rating and was a solid defensive presence with a 2.6% steal rate. McDuffie will have to improve his outside shot and his efficiency if he’s going to reach the next level, but things look good on paper.
