It’s Monday, and that means it’s time for our weekly Mid-Major Madness rankings!
In our preseason edition, Gonzaga took the top overall spot, but just barely. This week, it switches to Saint Mary’s — again, just barely — after the Gaels’ big win over Dayton.
Rhode Island and Wichita State trail behind them after both teams impressed to start the season — the Rams beat Cincinnati and gave Duke a game in Connecticut, while the Shockers picked up solid wins over Tulsa and Long Beach State.
This week, we also welcome five newcomers to the poll. Ohio and Yale both enter on the heels of buy game victories, Saint Joseph’s beat three top-200 teams to start the season, and Utah State snuck in after a season-opening win over UC Irvine.
Then there’s Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles start the season at just 1-3, but earn a spot in the poll because all three of those losses were to top-30 KenPom teams, and they came frustratingly close to upsets over Baylor and Michigan State. Yes, eventually FGCU will need to start winning to stay ranked, but for now, we love their potential.
So, without further ado, here’s where we stand for Week 2. Come at us in the comments with all your grumblings:
