Western Michigan player Joeviair Kennedy charged with murder

The alleged shooting occurred last Thursday in Kalamazoo

Joeviair Kennedy, a freshman guard on the Western Michigan University basketball team, has been charged with murder and armed robbery, prosecutors announced Monday. Kennedy is charged with shooting and killing 19-year-old Jacob Jones last Thursday at an off-campus apartment in Kalamazoo.

Authorities allege that Kennedy, 20, shot and killed Jones following a robbery in which Kennedy stole Jones’ phone and money.

Kennedy has been suspended by the university and already removed from the Broncos’ official website. He was in his second year at Western Michigan after redshirting last season, and was averaging 3.1 points in just over 7 minutes per game this season.

Western Michigan head coach Steve Hawkins called the fatal shooting, “a devestating tragedy for everyone involved.” The Broncos next take the court on Sunday as they face Washington on the road.
