Kyle Perry, who is in his ninth year with the program and fourth as associate head coach, will take over as interim head coach for the upcoming season.
Payne is retiring at age 66 after 16 years as a head coach in college basketball. He took over at USC Upstate in 2010, and compiled a 112-120 record in seven years as head coach of the Spartans, but never lead them to an NCAA Tournament birth.
The Spartans are coming off a 17-16 season that included a 7-7 record in the Atlantic Sun, good for a fourth place finish.
