College Basketball Twitter: Who we hate

College basketball Twitter is a fun place, full of good-natured, even-keeled, well-educated individuals who are passionate about their team and are never prone to overreact.

So it might shock you to learn that there are actually some teams out there that fans dislike.

Last Friday, I was curious about who those teams were, so I posted the following tweet, and retweeted it periodically throughout the weekend:

The tweet itself had 206 replies, plus a bunch of quote tweets. I posted the question on Facebook as well and also got a handful of responses. In all, the good people of online gave out 981 hate votes.

Some findings from those 981 votes:

• 144 went to Duke, by far the most hated team by our followers/fans
• Kentucky came in second at 113
• After that, there was a huge gap with Syracuse at 51 and North Carolina at 42
• 151 different schools got at least one vote, including Lamar, The Citadel, and Canisius for whatever reason
• VCU is the most hated mid-major, with 14 votes
• While 151 schools had at least one vote, more than half of the votes went to the same nine schools
• Based on who was voting for which schools, the Marquette-Wisconsin hate and Xavier-Cincinnati hate is very, very real

And now a sampling of the very best of your hate...

And I’m not sure what this is in reference to, but it seems like quite a burn from a Marquette fan.
