The confetti rained down from the rafters, the tears swelled in the eyes of many, and somewhere in Denton, Texas, the champagne flowed freely.
Scrappy, the underdog from North Texas, won the 2017 Mid-Major Madness Mascot Melee over Cleveland State’s Magnus in a vote that was tied at 50 percent a piece with mere seconds to go.

Scrappy, the guy who knocked off Izzy from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the first round and never looked back, is officially the best mascot in all of mid-major college basketball.
As we must do while the winners celebrate, we tip our hat to Magnus as well, who gave Scrappy all he could handle. Magnus even went on local TV this morning to campaign and offered free tickets to anyone who voted for him.
Well done on both sides.
And a big thank you to all the athletic departments who supported and promoted their mascots throughout this event. They spread the word and made it a waste of time that was more fun than we could have ever imagined. Thank you to the fans who voted, as well.
Now, here at Mid-Major Madness, we’ll return to our regular programming. Season preview content will start rolling out soon, so be on the lookout. But before we get to that, we leave you with our tribute to the Mascot Melee, One Scrappy Moment.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Mascot Melee.
