NCAA Tournament First Round: Stephen F. Austin falls short in Dallas

The Lumberjacks gave Texas Tech all they could handle and then some, but it wasn’t enough.

The 14 seed Lumberjacks played a fantastic game for the first 35 minutes, but pretty much fell apart in the closing minutes of the contest, ultimately falling to 3 seed Texas Tech.

They held the lead for the majority of the first half, even while Texas Tech was doing things like this:

Stephen F. Austin also led for almost the entirety of the second half. Then the Red Raiders came storming back. Lumberjacks guard Ty Charles fouled out with 2:48 remaining in regulation. Then with just over 2 minutes remaining in the second half, Texas Tech guard Brandone Francoise hit an enormous corner three to extend Texas Tech’s lead to six, their biggest of the game.

The 2018 Southland champions just couldn’t put the ball in the hoop in the closing moments of the game. Their last made field goal came with 5:24 remaining in the game.

Lumberjacks guard Shannon Bogues appeared to be suffering from cramps late in the game, and it definitely took a toll on his play. Bogues had 14 points in the game, but was not a major factor in the closing minutes.

Ivan Canete also had a solid game for the Lumberjacks, even though it was in a losing effort. He had 17 points along with three rebounds and three steals.

Texas Tech moves on to the 2nd round, where they will await the winner of St. Bonaventure and Florida, who face off later tonight.
