As Rothstein and Goodman both point out, Jones coached at LSU before spending one season with the Wolf Pack. At LSU, Jones posted a 90-72 record and made appearances in the 2015 NCAA Tournament and the 2016 NIT. In his final season in Baton Rouge, Jones was instrumental in recruiting future No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons. Before that, he led North Texas to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances over 11 seasons.
Texas Southern’s hire comes on the heels of a tumultuous offseason for the Tigers. Former head coach Mike Davis bolted to Detroit Mercy on June 5, then starting point guard guard Demontrae Jefferson announced his intent to transfer on Twitter last week.
