This article has been updated to reflect Yarbrough’s reported arrest on Tuesday evening
Illinois State Redbirds star Milik Yarbrough has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities, the team announced in a statement on Wednesday. The statement did not give a reason for the decision, but reports surfaced later in the day that Yarbrough had been arrested on Tuesday night.
The Pantagraph reported that Yarbrough was charged with “failure to provide information and render aid in an injury-related accident” after allegedly striking a woman with his car on Sunday. The woman was treated for injuries to her foot and elbow.
The suspension is the latest off-court issue to take away from what has been a remarkable career for the rising senior. His troubles started in 2016 when he was charged with theft of a cell phone. Those charges were later dropped. Then in 2017, he was charged with driving on a suspended license and was later arrested for failing to appear in court following that charge. Earlier this summer, he was arrested after an incident with an ex-girlfriend.
Because we do not know all the details, we can’t handicap the length of his absence. If this is something that extends into the season, the Redbirds will be down perhaps their best player. Yarbrough was a 2018 First Team Missouri Valley selection, averaging team highs in points (16.6) and assists per game (4.8). He also shot 80 percent from the line and pulled down 6.6 rebounds per game.
Illinois State will open its season on Oct. 30 with an exhibition game against Lewis. It starts for real on Nov. 6 at home against Florida Gulf Coast.
