3 mid-major players named to Cousy Award watch list

The 20-man preseason watch list was released Monday.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the 20 watch list candidates for the 2020 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award on Monday, Named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor recognizes the top point guards in Division I men’s college basketball.

Within the list of 20 players are three players from mid-majors: Bryce Aiken from Harvard, Jordan Ford from Saint Mary’s, and Marcus Evans from VCU. For those who aren’t familiar with these players, here is a brief look on what they did last season in order to end up on the list.

Bryce Aiken — Harvard

If you don’t know of Aiken, you’ve probably seen him make the top play on ESPN’s SportsCenter with a double-clutch buzzer-beater back from his game against Columbia. In that game, he scored 44 points: the second-most points in a single game in Harvard history.

His high scoring and efficiency helped Harvard clinch their seventh Ivy League title in nine seasons. He was named a Lou Henson All-American and was also the unanimous All-Ivy League first-team selection last year. Oh yeah, he led Harvard to the NIT as well.

Jordan Ford — Saint Mary’s

Ford is coming off a season when he scored the third-most points in Saint Mary’s history. He started all 34 games for the Gaels while averaging 21.1 points. He basically led SMC in all scoring categories in including field goals made, three-pointers made, and free throws. Defensively, he also led the team in steals.

Marcus Evans - VCU

Evans overcame two Achilles’ tendon surgeries and returned to All-Conference form during the 2018-19 season. Evans was named to the 2019 All-Atlantic 10 Conference first team and A-10 All-Academic Team.

In his comeback, he stated 30 out of 33 games, plus averaged 13.6 points and 3.2 assists per game in the process.
