A10 Semi: St. Bonaventure 68 Rhode Island 51

Brooklyn, NY - A few thoughts on the St. Bonaventure win over Rhode Island in the first semi at Barclays Center…

Rhode Island led by fifteen late in the first half. Bonnies closed the gap by hitting a few shots that got their confidence back. "The last five minutes of that first half were critical ," St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt said. At the half URI led 29-27. Bona, though, had the momentum.

All season the defense was key for Bona. It picked up noticeably the second half as Rhody struggled to get a good look. They shot 7 of 25 (28%) the final twenty minutes. URI was playing their third game in as many days but credit the defense of Bona, now 18-15, for changing the game.

Rhody had a nice run. They knocked off LaSalle in the opener on Thursday . Next was Friday’s upset of VCU-a game virtually no one thought they could win. Rams of coach David Cox finished 18-15 and are a young group certain to be heard from down the road.

Courtney Stockard of Bonaventure scored nine points on one of eleven shooting. Shows how far the Bonnies have progressed this season. Earlier in the campaign they needed about twenty something from the Senior forward for a chance. Today he struggled offensively and the likes of game high scorer Kyle Lofton (23 points) showed the way.
