Podcast: John Becker inherited a regional power and has made Vermont even better

Vermont is going to be scary good in 2019-20. Again.

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-First Round- Florida State vs Vermont David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Vermont has been a regional basketball power for the better part of two decades now. That’s nothing new. But in the eight seasons since John Becker took the head coaching job, the Catamounts have somehow become even more dominant.

Vermont has won at least 27 games and the America East regular season title in each of the last three seasons and is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance where it gave Florida State all it could handle in the First Round. The Catamounts shouldn’t be this consistent,, yet somehow they are. Their 2018-19 run should be the ceiling for an America East program, yet 2020 projects to be even better.

Becker joined the Coaches’ Show to discuss what his program is done and how he plans to take it to the next level. Vermont will lose Ernie Duncan next year but should bring back Anthony Lamb and the bulk of the team’s scoring. Meanwhile the university is breaking ground on a new arena for Catamounts to pack every night.
