Podcast: Bob Richey has kept Furman rolling through graduations, adversity, and more

Furman lost more than half its production from 2018 and was somehow even better in 2019.

NCAA Basketball: Furman at Louisiana State Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Thanks to a couple of early season upsets, Furman was the first mid-major school to break through onto the national stage in 2018-19. The Paladins’ win over Villanova launched them into the Top 25 and put the SoCon on the map as a potential multi-bid league.

Though Furman fell just short of its ultimate goal of the NCAA Tournament, Bob Richey’s group still won 25 games and hosted a first-round NIT game. Matt Rafferty established himself as one of the best big men in the mid-major world and as a team, Furman presented one of the best defenses in college basketball.

Richey stopped by the Coaches’ Show to talk about the year that was and to look forward to what’s still to come for his program. With plenty of returning talent and a strong recruiting class on the way, Furman is poised to contend once again. Richey looks at what needs to happen in order for his team to reach the Big Dance and how the SoCon as a whole has become one of the best mid-major conferences in the country.
