The Other Top 25: Here’s some Colgate appreciation

Brush up on the team the NET says is better than Kansas

NCAA Basketball: Colgate at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

Like most Americans, I’ve been thinking a lot about Colgate men’s basketball lately. This year, the Raiders are that team the NET seems to really love, making them the butt of snarky tweets from Basketball Journalists.

Colgate’s also really good, and has proven that so far this season, granted against only Patriot League competition. At 11-1, the Raiders’ lone loss came by two to Army on Jan. 3 — their second game of the season, while the Black Knights had already played six times. Since then, Colgate has routinely played games in the 80s and 90s and rank 25th in the country in adjusted tempo, per KenPom.

Colgate is also the best team in the country at defending the three, letting opponents shoot just 26.3% from deep, while shooting 38% themselves. The Raiders rank ninth nationally in effective field goal percentage (56.9) and fifth in turnover percentage (14.4).

They played Tennessee tough in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, where current leading scorer Jordan Burns dropped 32 points, made eight threes, and almost single-handedly pulled off the monumental upset. This year, Colgate figures to be better than a 15 if it could win the Patriot League tournament, and will not be a team to simply brush aside.

Anyway, Colgate is in The Other Top 25 this week. Here’s the whole thing:

The Other Top 25: Week 14

Rank School Record Change Our reasoning
Rank School Record Change Our reasoning
1 Gonzaga 22-0 - What if we ranked Gonzaga second as a bit? Wouldn't that be funny? A little bit of manufactured Discourse for our hungry followers, perhaps? Anyways, the Zags pants'd Saint Mary's and San Diego last week, but you already knew that.
2 Loyola University Chicago 19-4 - Was there a bit of a hangover from a pair of emotional tilts against Drake? Possibly. Nonetheless, the Ramblers escaped with a two-point win over Valpo in their lone game of the week to keep their strong resume without a major blemish.
3 Belmont 24-1 - Belmont has won more games than any other team in college basketball this season. Unfortunately, the Bruins haven't played a single game in the first two quadrants, so it's likely still going to be a OVC Tournament title or bust for their NCAA Tournament hopes.
4 Western Kentucky 15-4 - The Hilltoppers have an interesting resume. Two Q1 wins, including one over Alabama that continues to look better and better. WKU took matters into their own hands by scheduling an impromptu matchup with Houston on Thursday. Win that and WKU has a very real shot at an at-large bid.
5 BYU 17-5 1 A handful of quality wins. No bad losses. Strong marks in all of the ranking systems. BYU should feel good about its position heading into March.
6 Boise State 18-4 4 The Broncos notched two big wins over Utah State, further bolstering a strong at-large resume. A win at San Diego State this week could put them over the top.
7 San Diego State 17-4 2 Speaking of the Aztecs, San Diego State has now won eight in a row against the bottom half of the Mountain West. All eyes on Viejas this weekend.
8 St. Bonaventure 11-3 - The Bonnies have sputtered a bit lately, though their two losses in their last four games have been to quality teams in VCU and Saint Louis. Jaren Holmes and Kyle Lofton were both spectacular in Bona's win over Davidson on Sunday, playing all 40 minutes and combining for 37 points.
9 Drake 22-2 2 Three straight wins for Drake have the Bulldogs back in the NCAA Tournament at-large picture. They need to sweep their three remaining regular season games.
10 VCU 16-5 -3 You know George Mason fans take some satisfaction in handing VCU a bad loss as the Rams look to build their case for an at-large bid. That snapped VCU's six-game winning streak, which has it in a tie for frist in the A-10.
11 Saint Louis 11-4 -6 Saint Louis is a good team, but the Billikens really like to make things hard on themselves. A complete no-show performance against Dayton this week means they have to take a hit in The Other Top 25.
12 Colorado State 14-4 1 Colorado State is doing just enough to stay on the bubble and cannot afford a bad loss to Air Force this week. David Roddy has scored in double figures in five straight games and is one of the best rebounders in the Mountain West.
13 Winthrop 20-1 1 High Point gave Winthrop a game on Thursday, but DJ Burns and Co. were too much. The Eagles are now done with their regular season and will be the top seed in the Big South Tournament.
14 Utah State 14-7 -2 The bad news: Utah State let a pair of golden opportunities slip away this week with hard-fought losses to Boise State. The good news: Nevada will provide two more opportunities for quality wins this week.
15 UC Santa Barbara 16-3 3 UCSB swept Bakersfield and remains undefeated in 2021. A trip to UC Riverside looms, where the Gauchos will face their toughest tests in months.
16 Richmond 12-5 -1 After starting the season 4-0, the Spiders have not been able to find consistency. They lost to VCU last Wednesday before rebounding with a win over a solid Duquesne team.
17 Abilene Christian 18-3 -1 On Wednesday, the Wildcats will face the only Southland team that has beaten them this season in Sam Houston State. Without any true quality competition in-conference, ACU can try and goose its computer numbers over the next couple weeks to maybe move up a seed line.
18 Louisiana Tech 17-6 1 The Bulldogs swept UAB this week and only moved up one spot? MMM voters are frauds!!!!! In all seriousness, things are looking good in Ruston and the CUSA Tournament semifinals should be fantastic.
19 Wright State 18-5 -2 The Raiders saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end on Friday against Northern Kentucky, but rebounded Saturday to close the season. Wright State will actually be the 2 seed in the Horizon League tournament, with Cleveland State getting the top spot.
20 Toledo 18-6 NR Every Toledo starter registered an ORtg over 100 in the Rockets' win at Buffalo Friday. To no one's surprise, Marreon Jackson led the way with 20 points, six assists, and six rebounds.
21 Marshall 12-5 1 If Marshall had been able to play more of a non-conference schedule and rack up a couple more quality wins, it might have a real at-large case. Instead, the Herd will have to battle it out amid a crowded middle of CUSA for favorable conference tournament seeding.
22 Dayton 12-7 -2 At 12-7 (8-7 in the A-10), the only reason the Flyers are still ranked is because they, somehow, have beaten some really good teams. They added a season sweep of Saint Louis over the weekend.
23 Davidson 11-6 -2 The Wildcats lost to Bona on Sunday but can get revenge at home on Wednesday. Davidson is firmly in the mix in the conference race, but ends the season with two tough ones — it'll welcome VCU on Saturday.
24 Colgate 11-1 NR This season's NET darlings continue to roll. In fact, they're a two-point loss to Army in January away from being the subject of an ill-fated Mid-Major Madness GIVE COLGATE A 1 SEED campaign.
25 North Texas 12-6 NR The Mean Green enter the rankings off a sweep at a bad Southern Miss team over the weekend. They can really make a statement coming up with a trip to Marshall.

Also receiving votes: Liberty, Nevada, Akron, Saint Mary’s, UAB, Missouri State, Eastern Washington.
