Mid-Major matchups to watch this weekend: Dec. 10-11

We’ve got mid majors vs. Power 5 and the tip off of the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational in a loaded slate.

Saturday’s Slate:

Colgate vs. Vermont - noon ET, ESPN+

Traditionally a solid mid-major program, the Catamounts have looked poor in the early season but with three consecutive wins since Dec. 1, they’ll now travel to face a Colgate team with a Power-5 win already on the resume.

No. 5 UConn vs. Long Island - 12:30 p.m. ET, FS1

While year one of the Rod Strickland era has been tough for the Sharks who are still searching for a win against Division-I competition, they’ll get a shot at the nationally ranked Huskies in Connecticut.

No. 16 Kentucky vs. Yale - 1 p.m. ET, SEC Network

Coming off a tight loss against Butler, the 8-2 Yale Bulldogs will match up against the nationally ranked Wildcats in what could be an interesting battle if Yale can manage Kentucky’s size.

No. 2 Texas vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff - 1 p.m. ET, Longhorn Network

A competitive Golden Lions squad that lost to TCU by just one to open the season will get their fifth Power-5 battle of the 2022-23 schedule as they face a nationally ranked Longhorns team coming off their first loss of the year.

Dayton vs. UNC-Asheville - 2 p.m. ET, USA Network

While the Flyers were picked to win the A-10 this season, in reality, it’s been a struggle for a 5-5 team that will now have to deal with a strong offensive program in the Bulldogs who feature a few solid wins.

Richmond vs. Drake - 2 p.m. ET, ESPN+

Last season’s A-10 representative in the NCAA Tournament will look to bounce back from three losses in their last four games taking on an 8-1 Drake squad led by one of the nation’s top scorers in Tucker DeVries.

No. 22 San Diego State vs. Saint Mary’s - 2 p.m. ET, ESPN+

Two of the nation’s top mid-major programs will face off on a neutral court in Phoenix, Arizona, at the the Jerry Colangelo Classic. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Cleveland State vs. Kent State - 3 p.m. ET, ESPN+

Another top-ranked mid-major program in the Golden Flashes will look to rebound after two losses to nationally ranked teams and they’ll have to do so against one of the Horizon League’s best.

No. 1 Houston vs. No. 8 Alabama - 3 p.m. ET, ABC

The 8-0 Cougars will look to maintain their top national ranking as they welcome another top-10 squad in the Crimson Tide to the Fertitta Center. Possibly the game of the day.

No. 19 UCLA vs. Denver - 3 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network

An up-and-coming mid-major program in the Pioneers who currently sit at 8-2, led by an exciting group of transfer talent, will travel to L.A. to take on the Bruins.

Furman vs. Winthrop - 4 p.m. ET, ESPN+

The Other Top 25 sees another program in action as the Paladins looks to hold off the 5-5 Eagles and their high-scoring offensive roster led by Kelton Talford (17.8 PPG) and Sin’Cere McMahon (15.1 PPG).

UNC Wilmington vs. Jacksonville - 4 p.m. ET, FloHoops

The 5-2 Dolphins coming off a win over VCU will look to hand the 7-3 Seahawks their first non-Power-5 loss of the season.

UNLV vs. Washington State - 4:30 p.m. ET, FS1

The undefeated Rebels will try to add another Power-5 win to their resume as they open up the Las Vegas Clash against the Pac-12’s Cougars.

No. 11 Auburn vs. Memphis - 5 p.m. ET, ESPN2

The Memphis Tigers will search for a fifth Power-5 win of the season as they try to take down the undefeated Auburn Tigers in game 2 of Holiday Hoopsgiving from Atlanta.

Grand Canyon vs. North Texas - 5:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+

After being voted into a top-20 spot within this week’s The Other Top 25, the Mean Green will have to deal with the ruckus home-court advantage of the 7-3 Antelopes.

No. 15 Duke vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore - 5:30 p.m. ET, ACC Network

We’ve got our eighth mid-major vs. a nationally ranked program matchup of the day with the veteran Hawks looking to take down the Blue Devils.

DePaul vs. UTEP - 6 p.m. ET, FS1

Following three consecutive wins, the Miners will get a chance at a struggling Big East squad in the Blue Demons

Oregon vs. Nevada - 7 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network

The 8-2 Wolfpack will get a shot at their first Power-5 win on the season as they take on the 4-5 Ducks who’ve lost two of their last four.

Saint Louis vs. Boise State - 8 p.m. ET, ESPN+

Another Battle between two Other Top 25 ranked squads with the Billikens looking to rebound from a disastrous loss against Iona. They match up against the 7-2 Broncos who are on a six-game win streak.

SMU vs. No. 24 TCU - 10 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Could the 3-6 Mustangs be the second mid-major program to hand the Horned Frogs an upset this season?

San Diego vs. California Baptist - 10 p.m. ET

Despite loading up on transfer talent this season hasn’t been easy for the Toreros and now they’ll face a 6-4 Lancers squad for a late-night in-state rivalry matchup.

No. 21 Creighton vs. BYU - midnight ET, FS1

The .500 Cougars will look to bounce back from back-to-back losses against a Blue Jays squad coming off of their own three consecutive losses.

Utah State vs. Loyola Marymount - 12:30 a.m ET

As one of just four mid-major programs still with an undefeated record, the Aggies will have to go through the 8-3 Lions who just finished back-to-back wins over two mid-major powers in Nevada and GCU.

Sunday’s Showdowns:

Iona vs. St. Bonaventure - 11:30 am ET, Yes Network

With the opening matchup of the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational, we’ve got a battle between two of New York’s best programs live from the Barclays Center.

Duquesne vs. New Mexico State - 4 p.m. ET, ESPN+

The 7-2 Dukes look to keep rolling prior to conference play as they welcome in a 4-3 Aggies team.

No. 20 Iowa State vs. McNeese State - 6 p.m. ET, ESPN+

The struggling Cowboys will have an opportunity to pile on the misery for the nationally ranked Cyclones after a blowout loss to Iowa.

Hofstra vs. UMass - 7 p.m. ET, Yes Network

Game 2 of the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational features two guard-heavy rotations as a couple of top east coast mid-majors in The Pride and Minutemen face off at the Barclays Center.
