The Other Top 25: Liberty makes big jump to No. 3

The Flames win in Myrtle Beach; Florida Atlantic drops three spots

The top 10 saw several changes in just its second iteration of the 2023-24 season.

Florida Atlantic, who was No. 1 in the preseason and last week, dropped to a tie for fourth with James Madison following 61-52 loss to Bryant Saturday.

As a result, Memphis surged into the top spot. The Tigers received each of the first-place votes cast. They are 3-0 on the season, which was highlighted by a 70-55 win at Missouri Nov. 10. Penny Hardaway’s team ranks 30th in KenPom.

The biggest mover was Liberty, who catapulted from 13 to 3 and are immediately behind San Diego St. The Flames are a perfect 5-0 on the season and claimed the Myrtle Beach Invitational crown. Ritchie McKay’s club earned a 14-point win over Furman, a 17-point victory against Wichita St. and a 10-point win over Vermont in the championship game.

Princeton also saw a big rise. The Tigers came in at No. 7 after previously tying for 14th. They are 4-0 with a resume highlighted by an opening-night win over Rutgers. Mitch Henderson’s squad has also defeated Hofstra, Duquesne and Monmouth.

Grand Canyon jumped from 16 to a tie for No. 10 with Colorado St. The Antelopes ran to the Arizona Tip-Off Cactus Division championship game with a 34-point route of Northern Arizona and a four-point win over San Francisco. They ultimately suffered their first loss of the season by seven against South Carolina.

Five teams, who were previously unranked, found their way into the Other Top 25: Vermont at 17; Weber St. at 23; UC Irvine, Santa Clara and San Francisco tied for 24.
