Paul Hewitt Not Returning to George Mason

After an impressive tenure at Georgia Tech, Paul Hewitt was never really able to get things going at George Mason.

In a move that will surprise no one George Mason has decided to move on from head coach Paul Hewitt. In four years in Fairfax Hewitt was just 66-67 and 32-38 in combined CAA and Atlantic 10 play.

In a statement released Monday Patriots' Athletic Director Brad Edwards said:

"Mason made a significant commitment to its athletic programs, especially men’s basketball, when the university moved to the Atlantic 10 Conference two years ago. The university has high expectations for the program and thus determined a change was needed.

"Paul has always been a tremendous advocate for the sport of college basketball and we are extremely appreciative for the manner in which he has represented the university and for his service to the student-athletes and to the program."

The names for potential replacements are already swirling in Fairfax. Among them are former Alabama head coach Anthony Grant, High Point's Scott Cherry, Miami assistant Chris Caputo, and Boston Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga.
