On the eve of Louisville's big Sweet 16 match up with rival Kentucky, the Cardinals associate head coach Kevin Keatts has accepted an offer to become UNC Wilmington's next head coach. The Seahawks fired Buzz Peterson after the conclusion of this past season.
Keatts went to Ferrum College before coaching at Southwestern Michigan from 1996 to 97 and then became an assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia where he would eventually become head coach and win two prep national championships. He coached Joe Alexander, Jordan Crawford, Josh Howard, Vernon Macklin, Mike Scott, Marreese Speights, Sam Young, David West, and Montrezl Harrell at the prep level. Keatts also served time as an assistant at Marshall in the early 2000s.
Keatts is the second Louisville assistant to leave for a head coaching job in as many years as Kareem Richardson took the head coaching job at UMKC a year ago. The Seahawks have not had a winning season since 2007-2010.
