Bryce Drew and the Valparaiso Crusaders not only got a big commitment from a 3-star, in-state recruit but landed a former NBA player's son in the process. Rik Smits' son, Derrik, will not stray far from the "Dunkin Dutchman's" Indiana Pacers roots when he suits up in the Horizon League next year.

The 7'0 Zionsville Community High School star (4 inches shorter than his dad, was considered by many as a Top 40 center in the Class of 2015. He averaged 10.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots as a junior a year ago. Smits turned down Butler, Xavier, Clemson, Ball State, UTEP, Indiana State, and UNC Greensboro to play for Valpo.

Smits is Bryce Drew's first signing for the Class of 2015. Valpo added 6'8 David Skara to the mix this year and will begin the season November 14 when they host Southern Conference contender the East Tennessee State Buccaneers.
