Horizon League Weekly Recap: This First Week

The first week of the season led to some surprises, some upsets and a few outstanding performances.

This week extends into 2 more days as the season started on a Friday and we've got the low down on each game that happened over the course of the first week of the season. Let's take a look at the week that was.

Friday, November, 14

Iona 78, Cleveland St 73
Poor shooting from inside the arc causes the Vikings to fall to Iona. Hitting 45% from behind the arc and 40% from inside the arc cost Cleveland St.

Wright St 73, Belmont 70
Our full recap is linked above. Wright St. won on a 7 straight points scored.

Detroit 77, Rochester College 54
Detroit beat up on a local NAIA team.

#14 Iowa State 93, Oakland 82
You will see Wide Right Natty Light's recap of the game above. Iowa St. led by as much as 20 points in this contest, so it was impressive to see Oakland spark a bit of a comeback. 

Valparaiso 90, East Tennessee St 76
The newcomers stole the show as Darien Walker and Tevonn Walker combined to score 36 points as Valpo shot 50% from the field.

DePaul 72, UIC 71
DePaul holds of a surging UIC team to win the battle of Chicago. UIC was down 16 points at half and left a valiant comeback.

Auburn 83, Milwaukee 73
Our full recap is above. Auburn led a massive comeback as they trailed by double digits at the 10 minute mark. Matt Tiby was hardly quiet, but it wasn't in the statistical collumns you want.

Saturday, November 15

Green Bay 88, Illinois-Springfield 57
Green Bay opened up against a Division 2 opponent and rightly beat them.

Kent State 69, Youngstown St 61
A 2 for 13 effort from behind the arc doomed the Penguins. Very briefly the Penguins led in the second half after trailing by 8, but they couldn't overcome their 37.1% shooting.

Sunday, November 16

Youngstown St 71, Oberlin College 53
YSU notched their first victory with a convincing win over an in state Division 3 opponent.

Wright St 76, Ohio Dominican 64
Wright St played host to an in state Division 2 opponent soundly beating the Panthers.

Missouri 56, Valparaiso 41
After dropping their first game, an angry Missouri team took out their frustration in the second half on Valpo.

Monday, November 17

Eastern Michigan 89, Oakland 77
Our esteemed colleagues at Hustle Belt have the recap in the link above.

Cleveland St 85, Tiffin 56
Cleveland St. got their first win of the season against Division 2 Tiffin.

UIC 67, Western Illinois 64
The Fire won against an interstate foe with Jake Wiegand getting his second double-double of the season.

Milwaukee 75, MN Crookston 54
Milwaukee defeated a Division 2 opponent in Minnesota Crookston.

Oregon 83, Detroit 66
Detroit couldn't overcome a strong second half push from the Ducks. Juwan Howard Jr led the Titans with 18 points, but they couldn't make up for the 35.8% shooting from the field.

Tuesday, November 18

Central Michigan 75, Youngstown St 63
Hustle Belt's coverage of Penguin's loss is above.

Wednesday, November 19

Bowling Green 70, Wright St 55
The Hustle Belt again has coverage as the MAC's Falcons defeat Wright St.

Cleveland St 60, Jacksonville St 46
As part of the Global Sports Showcase, the Vikings were able to withstand a Gamecocks run in the second half and pulled off the win.

Western Michigan 82, Oakland 71
Oakland continues their tour of the MAC and Hustle Belt gets to know the Grizzlies a little better.

IUPUI 70, Milwaukee 68
The Jaguars rode an 11-2 run to take a 6 point lead with 29 second left. Mason Archie II made 5 of 6 free throws to hold on to the lead and Khufu Najee sealed the win with a steal at the very end of the game.

Valparaiso 91, IU South Bend 55
Valparaiso's David Skara scored 17 points in the victory of the NAIA Titans.

#3 Wisconsin 84, Green Bay 60
Wisconsin's bigs were the story here as Green Bay fell to the third ranked team in the country.

Thursday, November 20

#24 Michigan 71, Detroit 62
The Wolverines spoiled the Howard family's emotional return to the Fab Five university.

Friday, November 21

Valparaiso 59, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 46
Despite turnovers and poor free throw shooting, Valpo was able to win the opening game of the Central Michigan Challenge.

Yale 70, UIC 58
In the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic, the Ivy was able to knock off the Flames using good 3 point shooting and free throw shooting.

Eastern Michigan 71, Youngstown St 62
Youngstown State's poor 3 point shooting continues as the Eagles rode a 12-4 run and held the Penguins to 4 for 15 shooting to close the game.

Oklahoma St 82, Milwaukee 68
While the Panthers out rebounded Oklahoma St, their 17 turnover and 23 fouls helped the Cowboys pull off the victory. Steve McWhorter nearly had a triple double with 18 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds.

Saturday, November 22

Detroit 66, South Alabama 53
My good buddy Ben wrote up the Detroit-South Alabama game.

Savannah St 87, Cleveland St 83
Savannah St. hit two 3s in the final 10 seconds of regulation to force overtime. The Tigers than held Cleveland St. scoreless over the final 2 minutes of overtime.

Youngstown St 82, Longwood 72
The Penguins took their second game of the EMU showcase over the Longwood Lancers. Our own Parks Smith is quite bummed by the loss of his alma mater.

Wright St 86, Charleston Southern 79
The Raiders knocked down 11 free throws over the final 2:30 win at Charleston Southern. Wright St. knocked down 10 threes and shot 57.7% from the field.

Kent State 78, UIC 60
The Flames hit only 2 of their 13 three point attempts as Kent St. shot 50% from beyond the arc. Jake Weigland had a career high 26 points in the loss.
