If you didn't know the name Ryan Mikesell before Friday, no one would blame you. He didn't turn heads on the recruiting trail: Dayton was the only offer he had from the A-10, and most of the others were from the MAC or the Horizon League.
So when he stepped up for 21 points in his college debut against Southeast Missouri State, you are allowed to be surprised. Mikesell played 26 minutes and dropped five 3-pointers while going 7-for-9 from the floor. He added eight rebounds, four assists and a block in the win.
All of that when he didn't have a turnover.
That is one heck of a debut. And that is why Dayton's Ryan Mikesell is our Mid-Major Madness freshman of the week.
The Flyers take on Alabama on Tuesday in what should be a strong test of what Mikesell can do as a follow-up to this debut.
