Mid-Major Madness Freshman of the Week: Jordon Varnado, Troy Trojans

Trojan freshman Jordon Varnado is putting together a strong season for Troy.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

There has been a quietly awesome season taking place at Troy, and it has probably gone unnoticed because the Trojans are 4-5 this year.

Jordon Varnado is averaging nearly 18 points per game and 8.3 rebounds. That goes along with 1.4 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. That is not a bad freshman season, especially considering that he is doing it very efficiently with an ORat of 127.8.

Perhaps we all should start taking notice now, as Varnado is our Mid-Major Madness freshman of the week.

He played just one game, a 78-69 loss to Seton Hall on Thursday. During that game against the Pirates, Varnado had 25 points on 9 of 13 shooting, including a 5-for-6 effort from 3-point range. He added 11 rebounds and a block in the loss. There is an argument to be made that he was the best player on the floor that night, with only Seton Hall sophomore Desi Rodriguez potentially having a stronger case.

Troy has a non-Division 1 game this week against Paine on Thursday night.
