It is not often that a player walks away with the player of the week award and rookie of the week award in the Ivy League. That is a league dominated by upperclassmen, and for a rookie to break through, he had to really excel.
So it should be no surprise who the Mid-Major Madness freshman of the week is this week. Cornell's Matt Morgan played a major role in both of the Big Red's wins this week, including two 30-point performances.
He began his assault Saturday in a 77-65 win over Harvard. Morgan went 5-for-12 from 3-point range, and 12-for-13 from the free throw line, totalling 33 points. He added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win.
His 33 points was a Cornell freshman record, and his hot long-range shooting and strong foul shooting down the stretch helped to seal the Big Red's first win against the Crimson since 2010.
He followed that up with another impressive performance against Dartmouth on Sunday, with most of his damage coming at the free throw line. Morgan went 17-for-23 at the foul line in a 77-73 win, and added two blocks while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Twenty-one of those points came in the final 10 minutes to help Cornell come back from a nine-point deficit and move to 2-2 in the league.
For his impressive performances -- all-time great ones for freshman at Cornell -- Matt Morgan is our Mid-Major Madness Freshman of the Week.
