It isn't often that we have a tight battle for the Freshman of the Week award. Normally, there is just a single freshman that stood out over the course of the week.
That was certainly not the case this time around, as three freshman put up some impressive numbers this week.
Wofford's Fletcher Magee struck big against VMI, scoring 34 points, on 11 of 13 shooting, including 9-for-10 from 3-point range. He went on to score 21 and 15 in his final two games of the week, and added another five triples. But that wasn't the best performance.
Buffalo's C.J. Massingburg had 12 points, four assists and a steal against Toledo, and followed that with an impressive 36 point game against Ohio on Friday night. He added five rebounds, three assists, four steals and two blocks in what was ultimately a loss for the Bulls. And yet, that wasn't the best performance.
No, that belonged to Nick Emery at BYU. In his two games this week, Emery shot 25-for-36 from the floor, a 69.4 percent clip that certainly didn't all come from bunnies at the basket.
Emery was on fire from 3-point range, especially against San Francisco. In that game, he hit 10 of his 12 attempts from behind the arc, and scored 37 points in a win for the Cougars. He added two rebounds and five assists, while turning over the ball just twice.
He followed that with a 31-point performance against Santa Clara, including a 3-for-8 mark behind the arc. He added two rebounds, an assist and a steal in that win.
For his big-time shooting performance, and two 30-point games, Nick Emery is our Mid-Major Madness Freshman of the Week.
