The Eagles will embark on their 2014-15 campaign as the heavy favorites in the Atlantic Sun conference. But first, they have to get through a challenging non-conference schedule.

Although many strong programs aren't eager to travel to Alico Arena, Joe Dooley and FGCU still did a good job building a tough non-conference slate.

Senior guards Brett Comer and Bernard Thompson will lead the Eagles as they open the season with three straight games at home. After that, they won't have to travel far for the Gulf Coast Showcase as the Thanksgiving tournament is held at German Arena, a mere 10 minutes from the university.

The Eagles also travel to South Dakota State and UMass for a pair of intriguing mid-major match-ups. After guarantee games at Xavier and Pittsburgh in late December, FGCU heads back to Fort Myers to finish a one year home and home series with UC Santa Barbara.

With Comer and Thompson back, as well as Jamail Jones and Nate Hicks, don't be surprised if "Dunk City" makes some noise early in the season. They suffer the departure of senior Chase Fieler and his front court versatility but with an influx of transfer talent, don't expect them to miss a beat.

The team lost their five starters from last year's team and will face some tough competition in their conference play as VCU and Dayton are home-and-home opponents for the Billikens this season.

The highlight of their non-conference schedule is a road trip to Wichita State. The Shockers are coming off a historic season where their lost to eventual national runner-up Kentucky in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Billikens will also be playing in the Corpus Christi Classic against Mississippi State in the opening match and then will play either Bradley or Texas Christian University in the second game.

Saint Louis will have to rely on various bench players from last year's team to be their starters this year. Junior guard Austin McBroom is the leading returning scorer for the Billikens as he averaged 7.3 points per game last season. Another major addition for the Billikens is Achraf Yacoubou who sat out last season after transferring from Villanova. He led Villanova in 3-point shooting percentage during the 2012-2013 season making 39.6 percent of these attempts.

Fairleigh Dickson University shows no fear as they stack their non-conference schedule against the likes of the A-10, Big 10, Big East, ACC and the Ivy League.

The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights will have no shortage of challenges in their non-conference tour for 2014-15.

Opponents from the A-10, Big 10, Big East and ACC, will provide the Knights more than enough on-court educational opportunity in preparation for their NEC exam. For a Northeast Conference team that barely made the conference tournament last year, it can be difficult enough to face the likes of St. Joe's and Rutgers, but add trips to New York to face St. John's and a long bus ride to Indiana for a shot at Notre Dame and the early month could seem to drag on forever.

But, that's supposed to happen right? As a mid-major, you look for the opportunities to play against bigger schools. And you look for quality opposition, even if it doesn't come from an elite conference like the above mentioned. FDU will have those games as well with home stands against Princeton and Delaware.

Preparing for the upcoming season will be a challenge for the Knights in more ways than just their schedule. Losing Sidney Sanders Jr. means losing a 1st team All-NEC player as well as the conference's Most Improved Player last year. Sanders is essentially the reason FDU was able to surprise everyone by taking down Rutgers in last year's non-conference game. He racked up 22 points and 10 assists in the upset. Given last year's result, I can't wait to see FDU revisit Rutgers this November.

Fortunately, returning senior Mustafaa Jones managed to ring up 21 points against Rutgers last year, as well as finish the season as the team's second leading scorer. Averaging 9.7 ppg last year, Jones will certainly have an opportunity to lead FDU this year, and last year's game against Rutgers certainly shows that he has the skill to do so.

Returning with Jones, the lone senior on the roster, will be fellow starter Matt MacDonald. Also like Jones, the 6-5 MacDonald will need to up his 8.6 ppg from last year in order to help fill the loss of Sanders Jr.

2013-14 saw FDU reach the conference playoffs and fall to the Robert Morris Colonials. Looking forward, the Knights of FDU will look to build on that run and see if a tough non-conference ballot will help prepare themselves for the NEC and another shot at a playoff run.

After playing just one pre-conference home game last season, Coach Dave Simmons and McNeese have loaded the home slate in 2014-15.

Last season, a talented group from McNeese struggled out of the gate fighting through a rugged pre-conference schedule that included just one home game before the calendar flipped to January. This season the Cowboys will have a much more comfortable road to travel early in the season playing a schedule that includes seven pre-conference home games, three against other Mid-Major competition. The highlight of those games for McNeese is a December 6th clash against regional rival and 2014 NCAA Tournament participant Louisiana-Lafayette.

Mike Lawrie

The Dukes of Duquesne will race out of the starting gate to their 2014-15 campaign. With only one stop outside of Pennyslvania and a majority of home games, the Dukes will be plenty rested for their fight in the Atlantic 10. Only time will tell whether this schedule will help or hurt them as they build their squad to face their A10 foes.

The Duquesne Dukes have a nonconference schedule for 2014-15 that is very opportunistic.

You could start by looking at two games against non-Division I opponents. You could start by looking at two opponents who are only in their second year of Division I competition. You could start by looking at 8 of 12 games played at home. Or you could start by looking at only one game outside the keystone state.

The Dukes are staring down the barrel of a nonconference schedule that will create high expectations to enter A-10 conference play with a record above .500. Looking ahead at year three of Coach Jim Ferry's rebuilding efforts, Duquesne will find excellent opportunities to notch a "W" against teams like Bluefield State, Abilene Christian, UMass Lowell and St. Francis.

But, don't expect the Dukes to waltz through their entire nonconference schedule. The Dukes will be making a state-wide tour with stops at Penn State, Pitt and Robert Morris, a tour that could easily result in 0-3 should favor not be with them.

Duquesne finds themselves in crossroads of sort. Two years under Jim Ferry has yielded results towards the bottom of the A-10, but nobody expects a mid-major to turn things around over night. Especially when you have say farewell to your top player in Ovie Soko, last year's A-10 top scorer and third team all-A-10. Add to the mix an ever-improving Atlantic 10 conference that just sent six teams to the NCAA Tournament, and you have a recipe for a potential step back.

Much will be expected of one of the nation's leading 3-point snipers in Micah Mason. Now in year two following his transfer from Drake, the Pittsburgh-area local will have plenty of opportunity to step into a bigger leadership position with the Dukes. But, he won't be alone.

An influx of 3-star recruits in Mar'Qywell Jackson, Eric James and TySean Powell along with the addition of red-shirt freshman Jordan Robinson will go a long way in building for the future as well as potentially strengthening the Dukes in the upcoming season's campaign.

The Duquesne Dukes have many reasons to look forward to this season with anticipation and expectation. Regardless of whether one thinks their nonconference schedule is too soft, it will give them chances to win and it will give them chances to learn.

And that is all they can ask for as they prepare for the A-10.

Vermont played it's toughest non-conference schedule last year. Trying to rival that, they've included six teams that made postseason tournaments and 10 who claimed at least 18 wins.

Vermont has always been a powerhouse in the America East. Hell, they even went on to give Duke quite a scare last season. But this year they're playing with a lot of new faces after losing six seniors. With a roster comprised of mainly underclassman, they're going to have to step it up if they want to tackle this non-conference schedule. Will their willpower be able to compensate for the lost talent?

Delaware has one of the strangest 2014-15 non-conference schedule's out yet. Home games will be sparse for Blue Hen fans.

Delaware has released their 2014-15 non-conference schedule and it's one of the most interesting that we've seen this year. The defending CAA champs won't play at home until December 3 when Army visits. The Blue Hens season will start with a five game road trip, including a three game swing in California.

Although home games won't be bountiful for Blue Hens' fans the slate does include a visit from AAC member Temple and A10 member St. Bonaventure. Delaware will also make trips to Liberty, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Robert Morris. It's not every day you see a CAA team make so many trips to opponents that are perceived below the CAA in the college totem poll.
